The last couple of years, we were really behind on decorating for Christmas, which was disappointing for me because I love Christmas decorations like a racoon loves shiny tin cans. So this year, I was determined to seize the day and start decorating for Christmas as soon as Halloween ended!
Before you get the wrong idea and think that I’m one of those people who wants to skip the rest of fall and the coziness of Thanksgiving and get straight to Christmas, let me set the record straight. I love Thanksgiving and Fall, and I do not want to skip straight to Christmas. It’s just that I don’t feel that Christmas decorations detract from my ability to celebrate Thanksgiving fully and properly…I actually feel that Christmas decorations add to the sense of merriness and happiness around Thanksgiving, so actually, for me, they are a bonus!
Since getting married 5 years ago, we have always had a real tree (or no tree at all in the very beginning), so that has also prevented me from decorating as early as I’d like to. However, this year, I have been incredibly fortunate to finally get my hands on my dream tree from Balsam Hill! It’s a 7.5′ Fraser Fir Narrow with Incandescent Lights, and I cannot rave enough about it. The realism is incredible, and I love that is has a smaller diameter than the full size trees, but at the same time, it’s not too skinny. It was very easy to set up, and it comes with a bag to store it in, which is so convenient!
We decorated it with a combination of:
1) glass balls that I picked up last year on 75% sale from Michael’s after Christmas
2) these beautiful Byzantine-esque starburst ornaments from the Nicole Miller x Balsam Hill collection (I used 2 boxes of them) and
3) the unique, family ornaments that we collect each year or that people in our family have given us over the years.
The final effect is perfect for us! It is beautiful and feels aesthetically coherent, which I love…but at the same time it’s deeply personal and filled with family treasures and memories, which is just as it should be at Christmas-time. The skirt and topper are from Balsam hill as well, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how they pull everything together!
Now I am scheming about how to decorate the rest of the house for Christmas. Suddenly, it’s December 7th, so I feel like I need to hurry up and do something quickly, because Christmas will come and go before I know it. One thing that I don’t like about being an adult is how quickly time seems to pass – it seems that the more things you have to do, the more quickly time seems to go. Funny and pretty annoying how that works. I have been wasting hours and hours browsing Pinterest for ideas, so I figured I’d share a few ones that I really love here:
I am really really into garlands right now, so I think I’m going to try my hand at making some and draping them various places around the house. I will report back and let you know how it goes, hopefully soon! Wish me luck!
