Cynthia Irani of Cynz Cakes has quietly been making a name for herself in the world of couture cake designers over the past year. An entirely self-taught baker who hails from Montreal, Cynthia baked her first cake at the age of 7 with her mother, an experience which first sparked her love for all things cake-related. A little over a year ago, she decided to bring her passion from sketchbook and watercolor dreams into delicious, confectionary reality, and Cynz Cakes was born after Cynthia took a course from the fellow cake artist Jasmine Rae of San Francisco, CA.
Since then, she has quickly gained international renown and recognition in the world of cake design for her pioneering techniques in the realm of buttercream piping and for the elevated aesthetic sensibilities that she brings to bear on her work. Her signature style encompasses innovative and unique techniques that she has developed through extensive experimentation and practice. In the cakes below, her beautiful free-flowing buttercream piped flowers and botanical forms lend the surface of each form a tactile, impressionistic texture which can only be described as an art form. The same can be said for her use of a palette knife to apply buttercream in a “painted” manner. In addition to these innovative and original techniques, Cynthia also utilizes edible dust to apply a watercolor-like finish to pieces of torn fondant, yielding an ever-so-delicate torn-paper effect, and most recently, she has turned to sugar paste flowers to enhance her creations, after received training from Maggie Austin in the discipline.
Cynthia’s cakes are a visual feast of texture and color and are easily recognizable thanks to her signature style which is so readily evident in her work. Whether large or small, whether for a wedding or a little one’s birthday party, Cynz Cakes are ethereal triumphs of patisserie which are a joy and delight to behold as well as to eat! You may have trouble choosing a favorite…I sure did!
